Since 2011, or maybe even before, I’ve seen users anticipating to get weird innovating features in the iPhone, next due for launch. The hologram feature, or transparent body shell, or the laser keyboard (the one that can virtually work on any kind of surface), and the list goes on.
The anticipation goes further before the device actually gets launched, every year, and every year.
But, even in 2015, those features are still missing. The only feature made home in the current make (s), i.e., iPhone 6s, and 6s Plus, is the 3D touch, which no one was expecting before the launch of ForeTouch powered trackpad in the new MacBooks, and Apple Watch, few months ago.
The Current ‘i’ Standard in Smartphones
3D Touch is mostly a software gimmick, which is achieved by using a physical tactic engine behind the touchscreen. In order to fix this kind of display, Apple had to make them little thicker.
If I’ve to come up with a practical name of the new touch feature, then I wish to call it the ‘right click of the smartphone’. You can quickly find the hidden menu inside any particular app, and perform a related action, instantly. Yes, just like the right click works on any PC software.
Other than this, the current makes have double RAM (now 2GB), faster processor (as always), bumped camera pixels with improved optics (12MP at rear, and 5MP at front), and newer iOS, with some minor tweaks in UI, and appreciable changes in performance and battery life management.
Now, if this is how the current iPhones look and work, then what features to be expected in the next iPhone 7, or the iPhone 7 Plus, or whatever Apple will like calling it next year.
The only thing every fanboy and tech geek is aware of is of the iPhone 7 release date, which is definitely going to be marked on ‘Some’ September, 2016. The rest, nothing has been released or even rendered, yet.
Also, with the growing era of Digital India, and I’m counting on the fact that Apple might bring the next iPhones as soon as possible after they are released. Yes, the iPhone 7 release date and price in India will be announced, as soon as they reach the stage.
iPhone 7 Feature Expectations in 2016
So, let’s think of some features, which we think should be part of the next model (s). Shall we?
#1 A compact version
Well, I’m 99% sure, that Apple will definitely launch a compact smartphone with a screen size between 4-4.3inch. Personally, I find this screen size, way better to use, and comfortable to hold, and I’m pretty sure that I’m not alone.
In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple launches this compact version in the next due launch event of 2015 (ok fine, I’m praying for it to happen).
A cheaper plastic variant can also make its way, in order to reach out the below $400 market. Whichever compact version arrives, I’m expecting them to have better specs, Retina display, standard Apple features to give Android a striking competition.
#2 More Pixels at Front
Every year, display technology is taking a skyward curve. Earlier, when LG G4 was marketed by the Korean giant, it was advertised to have the best display, till that time (directly, better than Galaxy S6). But, a couple of weeks ago, Sony tried all it can to snatch that crown by launching its Xperia Z5 Premium model, with the whooping 4k display (no one saw that coming).
Even in the current standards, full HD display works fine, and 2k sounds like a fine edge. Having a 4k display doesn’t make sense, as it’s hard to find the content of that standard to get the authentic pleasure.
But, I’m pretty sure that Apple wouldn’t be interested in going with the specs war, at least directly. Habitually, it will offer some awkward resolution crossing the full HD mark by some hairline, and finally name it with a version of Retina display. Like, I’m expecting it to be named Retina Premium or Plus.
Either way, an improved display with better resolutions, i.e., more pixels, is definitely on its way.
#3 Solution for those Bezels
For some users, current iPhones may look great, but the huge bezels around the phone, especially that bigger chin on top and bottom, isn’t doing any good.
If Apple can somehow minimise its size, then it will definitely bring a noticeable improvement. Comparing the iPhone 6 or 6s, with any Android device, in the same size, iPhones hold 4.7inch display, while the Android devices can easily entertain 5.2inch. It’s no surprise if you find some Reddit threads on the screen to bezel comparisons.
In order to keep the handling of the device improved, and at a top-notch standard, Apple needs to find a solution here and minimise those bezels.
If Home Button is the real challenge, then I wouldn’t mind if Apple takes some inspiration from the latest Xperia Z5 flagships, which affixed the whole button with fingerprint sensor at the sidebar (nicely done).
#4 3D Touch, everywhere!
The feature is already released but isn’t going to be available in every app, at least before 2015 ends. It will take few more months for the developers to use this feature, this of its application, and finally implement it, where it can make the real sense.
So, in the next iPhone, I can definitely pinpoint that the 3D Touch will be feeling home-like in the ecosystem, which is the only real (and one of the major) difference between the Android and iOS platforms, these days.
#5 Make better, and faster, Everything!
This doesn’t need to be mentioned, but since we’re talking of the expected features, then I shouldn’t miss noting it. The newer processor will be faster, better, along with new camera optics, which will take the smartphone photography uphill.
This year, both Samsung and LG, were able to reach the standards Apple set, and as its point out in the comparison done by TheVerge, all three cameras are superb and top-notch in their own ways.
It clearly means that iPhone isn’t the clear crown holder in the camera standards, in 2015. But in 2016, it should learn from this slight loss, revise, and bring improvements to regain the crown.
Also, it is yet to see if the newer iPhones, suffer the #Bendgate or not. If the cult continues, then I’m definitely putting my money on a further strengthened metallic body frame.
At the camera side, I think Apple has already done the upgrade. The same 12MP and 5MP combination will be part of next family members, but if Apple can find space for OIS in the Junior, then it will be big welcome.
One camera feature I’m definitely counting on is the inclusion of depth sensor, which will bring minor, but the much-needed improvement in every shot.
Also, a revamped iOS version, will be heartily welcome.
#6 A brand new design
Everyone is (should) counting on it. If Apple fails to come up with new design standards for the next iPhones, it might get thunder up with the Android storm. Don’t forget, even BlackBerry is planning to strengthen its smartphone sells by finally coupling its future devices with Android OS (BlackBerry Priv the first one).
Lots of Chinese vendors (mostly Xiaomi, better known as Apple of China) are already after the clear, clutter free designs, Apple has been offering since years. And, they are counting millions of sales for each of their devices.
For me, iPhone 5 was the best designed smartphone, and even today, I couldn’t find any better alternative. So, a lot of work is on the table of Jony Ive, let’s say!
#7 |__Fill in the blank__|
I’m going to update this sixth feature, with the one, which will win the votes. So, pick your favourite one!
Update – The poll is ended, and following is the result! If you missed your chance, then mention your thoughts in the discussion section below.
Now, is anyone here still bragging for those stupid features to be included in the next iteration of iPhones? Yeah like laser keyboard, transparent body shell, hologram, and so on. Anyone?
Now, let’s hear your side. Don’t forget to share!
